Sohum Shah Announces ‘Tumbbad 2’ Amidst Re-release Success of Cult Classic ‘Tumbbad’: ‘Pralay Phir Aayega’

Actor and producer Sohum Shah has officially announced Tumbbad 2, following the remarkable success of Tumbbad’s re-release in theatres six years after its initial debut. The announcement comes at a time when the re-released version of Tumbbad has shattered its original box office records, even surpassing iconic films such as Sholay, Mughal-e-Azam, and Rockstar in terms of opening day collections.

Sohum Shah took to Instagram on Saturday to share the exciting news via a video teaser. The teaser features the film’s key characters, Vinayak Rao and his son Pandurang, as they embark on another ominous journey. With a voiceover from Shah, the teaser hints at the return of the haunting world of Tumbbad, saying, “Samay ka pahiya gol hai, jo beet gaya woh fir laut ke aayega… darwaaza bhi ek baar phir khulega (Time moves in circles. What happened in the past will return again… The door will reopen).”

More Details About Tumbbad 2

In a statement from his PR team, Shah expressed his excitement about revisiting the world of Tumbbad. He shared, “Tumbbad has been a special journey and a labor of love for us, and to see the love it continues to receive is overwhelming. This reaffirms our belief at Sohum Shah Films that content is king.”

Sohum also hinted at the sequel’s ambitions to push boundaries further: “With Tumbbad 2, we want to enhance the cinematic experience and take audiences deeper into the world we’ve created, with bigger twists and a more intense exploration.”

Tumbbad, which originally graced screens in 2018, made its return to cinemas on September 13, 2024. The visually arresting film centers around Vinayak Rao, played by Sohum Shah, as he journeys with his young son in search of mythical treasure guarded by the sinister entity Hastar. As the story unfolds, the film delves into themes of greed and obsession, as Vinayak spirals deeper into the dangerous quest.

Tumbbad: A Critical Success

Directed by Rahi Anil Barve, with creative input from Anand Gandhi and co-direction by Adesh Prasad, Tumbbad became a critical sensation upon its release. The screenplay was crafted by Mitesh Shah, Adesh Prasad, Barve, and Gandhi, while the production team included Sohum Shah, Aanand L Rai, Mukesh Shah, and Amita Shah.

At the 64th Filmfare Awards, Tumbbad garnered eight nominations and won three awards for Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, and Best Sound Design, cementing its place as a modern cinematic classic.

With the re-release generating unprecedented interest and Tumbbad 2 on the horizon, fans are eagerly awaiting what the new chapter has in store. As Shah teased, “Pralay phir aayega (The apocalypse will return).”
