Simbu Thanks Mani Ratnam for Support During Career Crisis: "He Offered Me a Film When Others Were Sceptical"

At the grand audio launch of the much-anticipated film Thug Life, actor Silambarasan TR, popularly known as Simbu, delivered an emotional speech thanking veteran filmmaker Mani Ratnam for believing in him during one of the most challenging phases of his career.

The event, attended by the film’s star-studded cast including Kamal Haasan and Trisha Krishnan, saw Simbu opening up about a time when he felt alienated from the industry due to ongoing controversies and a looming ‘red card’ from producers.

“He Called Me When Others Didn’t”

Sharing a heartfelt anecdote, Simbu recalled his admiration for Mani Ratnam from his childhood, particularly after watching Anjali, a 1990 film directed by Ratnam featuring a child artist in the lead. “I started crying after watching the film. I felt sad that I wasn’t a part of it despite being a child artiste here. At that time, I thought he wouldn’t call me ever,” Simbu said.

He went on to reveal that during a rough patch in his career, when many producers were reportedly hesitant to approach him, he received a call from Mani Ratnam’s production house, Madras Talkies. “I didn’t believe it at first. When I met him, I asked him if it was truly him who called me for a film. At a time when everyone was scared to work with me, he took that chance. I will never forget that,” he said emotionally.

Red Card Controversy

In 2023, Simbu was among several actors who were issued a ‘red card’ by the Tamil Film Producers’ Council—a temporary ban that restricted them from taking on new film projects. The move, which followed allegations of unprofessional behavior and contract disputes, left Simbu in a difficult position in the industry. Mani Ratnam’s support during that time appears to have played a pivotal role in the actor’s resurgence.

About Thug Life

Directed by Mani Ratnam, Thug Life stars Kamal Haasan, Trisha Krishnan, and Simbu in lead roles. The film has already generated significant buzz with its gripping trailer and powerful soundtrack. With a worldwide theatrical release slated for June 5, the film is poised to be one of the biggest releases of the year.

Simbu’s emotional tribute to Mani Ratnam at the audio launch not only highlighted their bond but also served as a reminder of how faith and mentorship can help artists overcome adversity and make powerful comebacks.
