Sunny Deol returns as Baldev Pratap Singh in action-packed sequel, director Gopichand Malineni to helm the project again

Sunny Deol is ready for round two of his pan-India action saga. Just a week after Jaat hit theatres, the veteran actor announced its sequel titled Jaat 2, confirming his return as Baldev Pratap Singh. The announcement comes despite the film’s underwhelming box office performance, leaving many industry watchers surprised by the move.

On Thursday morning, Sunny Deol took to Instagram to unveil the official poster of Jaat 2, captioned, “#Jaat on to a New Mission! #Jaat2”. The poster also confirmed that director Gopichand Malineni, who made his Hindi debut with Jaat, will return to direct the sequel. Producers Naveen Yerneni, Ravi Shankar Y, and TG Vishwa Prasad of Mythri Movie Makers are also backing the follow-up film.

About Jaat

Released on April 10, Jaat was Sunny Deol’s first pan-India action film and featured a power-packed cast including Randeep Hooda as the main antagonist, Regina Cassandra, Saiyami Kher, Vineet Kumar Singh, Zarina Wahab, and Jagapathi Babu. While critics gave it mixed-to-positive reviews, audiences praised the film’s high-octane action sequences and the intense face-offs between Deol and Hooda.

Lukewarm Box Office Performance

Despite the positive buzz surrounding the performances and action, Jaat did not create the box office storm many had anticipated. It opened to ₹9.50 crore in India and ₹13 crore globally. As of now, the film has managed a total of ₹57.50 crore net in India and around ₹75 crore worldwide within its first week.

With its collections steadily declining, it remains uncertain whether Jaat will be able to cross the ₹100-crore mark globally. The domestic numbers also suggest the film may struggle to touch the same milestone.

Bold Sequel Move

The decision to greenlight Jaat 2 despite the lukewarm commercial response is being seen as a confident move by the makers, possibly banking on the film’s long-term potential through digital and satellite rights, or strong overseas markets. While the full cast for Jaat 2 is yet to be revealed, Sunny Deol’s return and the same director-producer team point to a continuation of the original film’s tone and style.

Fans are now waiting to see what the “new mission” in Jaat 2 will entail and whether the sequel can deliver bigger box office success than its predecessor.
