Suriya’s much-anticipated film Retro, directed by Karthik Subbaraj, has crossed the ₹30 crore mark at the Indian box office within three days of release. However, despite a strong opening, the film is struggling to maintain its momentum over the weekend.
According to early estimates reported by Sacnilk.com, Retro collected ₹6.49 crore on Saturday—its lowest single-day figure so far. This is particularly surprising considering the weekend usually sees a rise in footfall. The film had a solid start with an opening day collection of ₹19.25 crore, followed by a steep drop on day two with ₹7.75 crore. The total collection now stands at ₹33.49 crore after three days.
The Tamil-language action-drama saw an overall occupancy of 38.49% in Tamil Nadu on Saturday, pointing to a lukewarm reception from the audience compared to initial expectations.
Retro features Suriya in the lead role as Paarivel Kannan, aka Paari, a man with a violent past. Pooja plays his romantic interest, Rukmini (Rukku), with supporting roles by Joju George, Jayaram, Nassar, and Prakash Raj. While Suriya’s performance has received praise from both critics and fans, it appears that strong word-of-mouth has not translated into a sustained box office run.
Despite the dip in numbers, director Karthik Subbaraj remains optimistic. Taking to his official X (formerly Twitter) account, he expressed gratitude to fans:
“Whole team of #Retro Thanks from the bottom of our hearts to every one of the audience who gifted us Loud cheers, applause and Loads n loads of Love in theatres… #TheOneWon !! I know it’s just a start of the Good times but have to say this coz I was really overwhelmed.”
Whether the film manages to regain its footing in the coming week remains to be seen, but for now, Retro stands at a critical juncture where audience reception will play a key role in its continued success.
