Shahani breathed his last at Dhakuria’s AMRI hospital on Saturday night, succumbing to age-related health issues. Mita Vashisht expressed her sorrow, emphasizing the deep personal loss felt by Shahani’s friends and admirers. She revealed, “He passed away around 11 pm last night due to age-related health issues at a hospital in Kolkata. He was ailing and his health had been declining.”

Remembering Shahani’s contributions to Indian cinema, Mita Vashisht praised him for his pivotal role in the parallel cinema movement. Shahani made his directorial debut with “Maya Darpan” in 1972, followed by notable works such as “Char Adhyay” and “Kasba.”

“Maya Darpan,” based on a short story by Hindi writer Nirmal Varma, explored the complexities of relationships and societal norms in feudal India. His film “Tarang” received acclaim, starring Amol Palekar and Smita Patil, and won a National Film Award. Shahani’s filmography also includes “Khayal Gatha,” which delved into the intricacies of the Khayal genre and Indian classical dance.
