Kiran Rao Clarifies Status of "Laapataa Ladies" for Oscars Consideration

Director Kiran Rao, known for her directorial debut “Dhobi Ghat,” has shed light on the possibility of her upcoming film “Laapataa Ladies” being considered for the prestigious Academy Awards next year. With the film set to hit theaters on March 1, anticipation is mounting regarding its critical reception and potential accolades.

Speaking at a recent screening event in Delhi, Kiran Rao shared insights into the team’s perspective on Oscar submission amidst the excitement surrounding the film’s impending release. Addressing the question of whether “Laapataa Ladies” would be submitted for Oscars consideration, Rao emphasized the significance of audience appreciation as the primary metric of success. She stated, “Our primary recognition comes from the audience’s response at the box office. If the viewers and the nation appreciate our work, that would be the greatest accolade for us.”

Rao elaborated on the team’s approach, highlighting their eagerness to gauge audience reactions following the film’s release. She indicated that while the Oscars represent a prestigious acknowledgment, their immediate focus lies on the reception “Laapataa Ladies” receives upon its debut on March 1, 2024. “There is a specific community tasked with assessing and selecting the finest films of the year, and if our film is deemed worthy, we will submit it for the prestigious Oscars. However, for now, we are eagerly anticipating the recognition we are yet to receive on March 1,” she remarked.

“Laapataa Ladies” had its world premiere at the esteemed Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) last year, where it garnered applause and acclaim. The social drama, set in 2001, features a compelling narrative centered around two young brides separated during a train journey, prompting a police investigation led by officer Kishan. The film stars Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, and Chhaya Kadam in lead roles.

Presented by Jio Studios and produced under the banners of Aamir Khan Productions and Kindling Productions, “Laapataa Ladies” has already captured attention on the global stage with its premiere at TIFF. As audiences eagerly await its theatrical release, the film stands poised to make a significant impact both domestically and internationally.

With Kiran Rao’s clarifications on the film’s awards trajectory, the focus remains on the imminent release of “Laapataa Ladies” and its potential journey towards industry recognition, including the coveted possibility of an Oscars submission in the future.
