Bhool Chuk Maaf, the much-anticipated comedy drama starring Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi, will now release directly on Prime Video on May 16, skipping its earlier scheduled theatrical release on May 9. The film marks the first on-screen pairing of Rao and Gabbi and is directed by Karan Sharma.
The change in release strategy comes in light of escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. The makers, Maddock Films and Amazon MGM Studios, announced the update via social media on Thursday, May 8. In an official statement shared on Instagram, the production houses expressed their concerns over “recent events and heightened security drills across the nation,” prompting the shift to a digital release.
“While we were eagerly looking forward to celebrating the film with you in the theatres, the spirit of the nation comes first. Jai Hind,” the statement read.
Set against the colourful backdrop of Varanasi, Bhool Chuk Maaf follows the story of Rajan (played by Rajkummar Rao), a hopeless romantic who unexpectedly lands a government job in his quest to win over his dream girl, Titli (Wamiqa Gabbi). However, things take a twist when Rajan gets caught in a time loop, reliving the day of his Haldi ceremony repeatedly. The film promises a mix of humour, emotion, and heartwarming moments as Rajan navigates destiny and second chances.
Speaking at a press event earlier, Rajkummar Rao reflected on his character and the relatable experiences he drew from real life. “I’ve lived this life, I’ve seen them close, around me. As I’ve lived that life, so somewhere there’s a relatable factor with these characters,” he shared.
On the work front, Rajkummar Rao was last seen in the 2024 blockbuster Stree 2 alongside Shraddha Kapoor. Wamiqa Gabbi recently appeared in Baby John with Varun Dhawan.
Fans can now look forward to watching Bhool Chuk Maaf from the comfort of their homes when it debuts globally on Prime Video on May 16.
