Loveyapa, featuring debutants Khushi Kapoor and Junaid Khan, hit theatres on Friday but struggled to make an impact at the box office on its opening day. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the romantic comedy directed by Advait Chandan collected only Rs 1.25 crore nett in India, marking a slow start.
Despite being released across approximately 2,300 shows nationwide, the film recorded a low 9.56% overall occupancy. In key markets, Mumbai had 404 shows, while the National Capital Region (NCR) accounted for 589 shows.
Stiff Competition from Badass Ravikumar
The film faced tough competition from Himesh Reshammiya’s action-packed film Badass Ravikumar, which had a significantly better opening, collecting Rs 2.75 crore from 2,200 shows across India. Loveyapa’s lukewarm start was further impacted by mixed critical reviews following its release on February 7.
Star-Studded Cast
Alongside Khushi Kapoor and Junaid Khan, Loveyapa boasts a supporting cast including Grusha Kapoor, Ashutosh Rana, Tanvika Parlikar, Kiku Sharda, Devishi Mandan, Aaditya Kulshreshth, Nikhil Mehta, Jason Tham, Yusus Khan, Yuktam Kholsa, and Kunj Anand.
A Remake with High Stakes
Loveyapa is the official Hindi remake of the 2022 Tamil hit Love Today, directed by Pradeep Ranganathan. The original film was a box office success, grossing Rs 83.55 crore worldwide against a modest budget of Rs 6 crore.
In contrast, the Hindi remake has reportedly been made on a much larger budget of Rs 60 crore, making its slow start a concern for the producers. The film’s plot revolves around a young couple who must swap phones for 24 hours before their wedding, a test imposed by the girl’s skeptical father.
Future Prospects
With its current pace, Loveyapa will need strong word-of-mouth and a boost over the weekend to recover its production costs. Whether it manages to pick up momentum in the coming days remains to be seen.
