Kanguva Day 1 Worldwide Box Office Collection: Suriya-Starrer Opens to ₹58.62 Crore Amid Mixed Reviews

Siva’s fantasy drama, starring Suriya, Bobby Deol, and Disha Patani, released on November 14, garners lukewarm responses but strong box office numbers.

The much-anticipated fantasy-drama Kanguva, directed by Siva and starring Suriya, Bobby Deol, and Disha Patani, hit theatres on November 14, earning ₹58.62 crore globally on its opening day, as claimed by the production house. The film, despite its weekday release, has shown promise at the box office but has faced mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike.

Box Office Performance

The production team celebrated the film’s global performance with a statement:
“Like a wild storm in the box offices worldwide. Lauded by all, our #Kanguva collects over ₹58.62 crore. Thank you to all the Anbaana Fans, Cinema Lovers, and Audiences who made this happen.”

However, Sacnilk.com presented a different report, estimating the opening day collection at ₹40 crore globally. This includes ₹28.50 crore from the Indian box office and ₹11.50 crore from overseas markets.

Producer KE Gnanavel Raja, who had ambitiously hoped for the film to eventually cross ₹2000 crore worldwide, admitted during a press conference, “I expected the film to make a lot more on its opening day, but whatever we have gotten is still phenomenal. The film still did well despite its opening on a weekday. I expect the film to become Suriya’s highest-grosser by Monday.”

Audience and Critical Reception

While Suriya’s performance has been widely lauded, many reviews have critiqued the film’s writing, direction, and technical aspects. A review by Hindustan Times noted:
“Kanguva has been in the making for several years and expectations were high given the producer Gnanavel Raja said it would amass ₹2000 crore at the box office. Suriya is the heart and soul of Kanguva, but the film by Siva just doesn’t do justice to his performance and commitment. So, it’s best to hold off on the sequel.”

Fans were similarly divided, with some praising Suriya’s performance while others pointed out issues with the film’s sound mix and narrative.

Sequel Hints and Cameos

Kanguva ends with scenes hinting at a sequel, Kanguva 2, which promises a showdown between Suriya and his brother Karthi, who makes a cameo in the current film.

Despite the polarised reviews, the film’s robust opening suggests it could gain momentum over the weekend, especially with fans eager to see how the story unfolds in the sequel.
