Actor Jyotika, who has been in the film industry for over two decades, recently spoke about the discrimination she continues to face for being the wife of superstar Suriya. While promoting her upcoming Netflix series Dabba Cartel, she shared her experiences of casual sexism and the challenges that come with being married to a popular actor.
Jyotika on Facing Sexism in the Industry
In an interview with News18, Jyotika revealed that despite her long-standing career, she still encounters biases based on her relationship with Suriya. “It seems like an everyday thing. I’m married to a superstar, so I face it every now and then, to this day. I see it happening even during interviews,” she said.
She pointed out how perceptions differ when it comes to men and women in relationships. “If I say that I feel lucky to have married Suriya, people respond by saying that he is a really nice guy. But if he says he feels lucky to have married a nice woman, it suddenly becomes, ‘Suriya is such a nice guy for thinking about his wife.’”
Jyotika also highlighted how casual sexism extends to daily life, even in materialistic aspects. “I may buy a car, but someone else is expected to press the button and check the features,” she said, emphasizing how ingrained these biases are in society.
She further elaborated on how this discrimination can affect a woman’s sense of identity. “It’s now a part of daily life. Sometimes, it reaches a level where you may have an identity crisis. A woman’s search for her identity also nudges her to make a lot of decisions and choices on her own. That’s also how I chose my career path,” she added.
Jyotika and Suriya’s Relationship
Jyotika and Suriya first met on the sets of the 1999 Tamil film Poovellam Kettuppar. The couple dated for a few years before getting married in 2006. They welcomed their daughter, Diya, in 2007 and their son, Dev, in 2010. Over the years, they have remained one of the most beloved couples in the Tamil film industry.
Jyotika’s Upcoming Project: Dabba Cartel
