Actor Durgesh Kumar, known for his role in Panchayat, is riding high on success with his latest film, Laapataa Ladies, being selected as India’s official entry for the Oscars 2025. The actor, who plays the role of constable Jaiprakash Dubey in the film, expressed his excitement and pride over the achievement, calling it a magical year for him.
Reflecting on the recognition, Durgesh said, “This year has been a magical year for actors like me, with so much acclaim coming our way. Aur ek artiste ko kya chahiye (What more could an artist ask for?).” He further added, “It’s thrilling and unbelievable. When we were making the film, all of us knew kuch zabardast ban raha hai (something special was being created). But we didn’t expect such an overwhelming response. Now the whole world will see how well we work.”
Kumar also shared a personal story about almost missing out on his role in Laapataa Ladies. He was in his hometown, Darbhanga, caring for his father who had suffered a brain hemorrhage. Torn between family duties and his career, Durgesh considered turning down the role. However, his elder brother encouraged him to seize the opportunity. “For once, I thought of saying no, but my elder brother reminded me that it was a huge opportunity to work with such big names and producers. So, I left for Sehore, Madhya Pradesh, the location of the shoot.”
The actor, who has worked with notable filmmakers, described his experience with Laapataa Ladies director Kiran Rao as extraordinary. “I’ve worked with master craftsmen, but working with Kiran ma’am was exceptional. She’s incredibly hard-working and insists on rehearsals until you perform according to her vision. She’s very strict when it comes to work.”
Laapataa Ladies has created buzz in the film industry, and with its entry to the prestigious Oscars, both the film and its cast are gaining international attention.
