Cricket met music in the most unexpected and heartwarming way when Coldplay’s frontman Chris Martin paid tribute to Indian cricket sensation Jasprit Bumrah during the band’s second Music of the Spheres concert at the Narendra Modi Stadium on January 26.
Jasprit Bumrah, currently recovering from a back injury, attended the sold-out concert, which was packed with die-hard fans. However, the highlight of the night wasn’t the breathtaking pyrotechnics or Coldplay’s electrifying setlist—it was a heartfelt moment dedicated to the ace bowler.
Chris Martin surprised the audience by singing a special tribute to Bumrah, humorously referencing India’s dominance over England in cricket. The lyrics went:
“O Jasprit Bumrah, my beautiful brother,
The best bowler in the whole of cricket.
We did not enjoy watching you destroy England, wicket after wicket.”
The band also displayed Bumrah’s signed Test jersey on stage as a mark of respect, much to the delight of cricket and music fans alike. The tribute struck an emotional chord, with fans praising the band for recognizing the cricketing legend. Social media was flooded with comments like, “Good to see Bumrah getting the well-deserved recognition,” and, “That’s a reverse swing from Chris Martin. Boom Boom Bumrah!”
For cricket fans, the moment was truly unforgettable. One user wrote, “It’s a goosebump moment. Bumrah is the best in the world—I only believe in Jassi Bhai,” while another humorously added, “Because even Coldplay believes in Jassi Bhai!”
Interestingly, this wasn’t the first time Coldplay referenced Bumrah during a concert. At their earlier show in Mumbai, the band played a clip of Bumrah decimating England’s batting line-up during the 2024 Test series. Chris Martin, in his signature playful style, pretended to read a letter from Bumrah’s lawyer, jokingly warning the band about using the cricketer’s name without permission.
Coldplay’s gesture added a unique and personal touch to their Ahmedabad concert, making it a memorable event for cricket and music fans alike. With Bumrah’s cricketing brilliance and Coldplay’s musical magic, it truly was a night to remember.
