After a nine-year break, renowned singer and composer Adnan Sami is making his comeback to Bollywood playback singing with two films: Kasoor and Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video. In a candid conversation, Sami opened up about his return, reflecting on the reasons behind his hiatus and his excitement for his upcoming projects.
Adnan Sami explains that his return wasn’t a calculated move but something that happened organically. “I primarily needed a bit of time to myself to recuperate, rejuvenate, and be receptive to new music,” he says. Recalling his last Bollywood project, Sami mentioned his iconic track Bhar Do Jholi from Bajrangi Bhaijaan, saying, “It feels like just yesterday that Bajrangi Bhaijaan happened. When you look back, you realize it’s been a while, but time flies at such a ferocious pace.”
Sami shared that although the pandemic slowed down his work, he is now fully back in “work mode.” He has been busy with global concerts but is thrilled to return to recording both film soundtracks and independent music. “Independent music has always been an important part of my life,” he added.
When asked about the gaps in his musical releases, Adnan admitted that he “got a bit lazy” but emphasized that he has always approached music with passion, not as a business. “I’ve never released songs just for the sake of it,” he explained, adding that his diverse body of work includes everything from classical to indie pop and film songs. “I’ve been in the business for 35 years, and while there may not be as much quantity, my approach is emotional. Music is not just a career for me; it’s my passion.”
Adnan also shared his thoughts on the trend of using old Hindi songs in modern films, comparing it to practices in Hollywood. He sees the trend as a positive way to revive great melodies from the past for new generations but stressed the importance of giving due credit to original composers when new artists create covers.
