Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan announced at the trailer launch of his son Junaid Khan’s upcoming romantic comedy Loveyapa that he has quit smoking. Aamir revealed that his decision was inspired by his desire to support his son’s success as he embarks on his Bollywood journey.
A Father’s Sacrifice
Speaking at the event, Aamir shared that he wanted to make a personal sacrifice as a father, expressing hope that it would bring good fortune to Junaid’s career. The actor also admitted that quitting smoking had been on his mind for some time.
Smoking Habits and Reflections
Aamir, known for his candid interviews, previously opened up about his smoking habit during an interview with Mid-Day in 2018. He shared that cigarette smoke affected his ex-wife Kiran Rao, though she was not averse to the pipe, a habit he later adopted.
“I quit smoking for two-three years when I was training for Dhoom 3, but I went back to it again. I tend to smoke more when my movie releases. Kiran would be affected by the cigarette smoke, but she wasn’t averse to the pipe. I even tried cigars but didn’t find them satisfying,” Aamir had said.
Transition to the Pipe
Aamir recounted how a friend introduced him to smoking a pipe, which he found enjoyable compared to cigarettes. “I liked it so much that I can’t go back to a cigarette now. I tried one recently, and the moment I took a puff, I found the taste horrible,” he said.
The actor was even seen smoking a pipe during an Instagram Live session while promoting Laapataa Ladies, a film directed by Kiran Rao.
Aamir and Kiran’s Journey
Aamir and Kiran Rao were married for 16 years before announcing their separation in 2021. The couple met during the making of Lagaan (2001), where Kiran was an assistant director. They tied the knot in 2005 and have a son, Azad. Despite their divorce, the duo continues to collaborate professionally.
