Renowned Filmmaker Kumar Shahani Passes Away at 83 in Kolkata, Confirms Mita Vashisht

Renowned filmmaker Kumar Shahani, a significant figure in Indian parallel cinema, has passed away at the age of 83 in Kolkata. The news was confirmed by actor Mita Vashisht, a close friend of the late director, who stated that Shahani had been ailing and his health had been declining.

Shahani breathed his last at Dhakuria’s AMRI hospital on Saturday night, succumbing to age-related health issues. Mita Vashisht expressed her sorrow, emphasizing the deep personal loss felt by Shahani’s friends and admirers. She revealed, “He passed away around 11 pm last night due to age-related health issues at a hospital in Kolkata. He was ailing and his health had been declining.”

Remembering Shahani’s contributions to Indian cinema, Mita Vashisht praised him for his pivotal role in the parallel cinema movement. She hailed Shahani as one of the greatest directors in the country, highlighting his integrity, consciousness towards society, and inspiring filmmaking. Mita Vashisht had collaborated with Shahani on various projects including “Vaar Vaar Vaari,” “Khayal Gatha,” and “Kasba.”

Born in Larkana, Sindh, Shahani’s family migrated to Bombay after the partition in 1947. He studied at the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India alongside Mani Kaul, another luminary in the realm of art house cinema. Shahani made his directorial debut with “Maya Darpan” in 1972, followed by notable works such as “Char Adhyay” and “Kasba.”

“Maya Darpan,” based on a short story by Hindi writer Nirmal Varma, explored the complexities of relationships and societal norms in feudal India. His film “Tarang” received acclaim, starring Amol Palekar and Smita Patil, and won a National Film Award. Shahani’s filmography also includes “Khayal Gatha,” which delved into the intricacies of the Khayal genre and Indian classical dance.

Survived by his wife and two daughters, Kumar Shahani’s legacy in Indian cinema remains indelible. His thought-provoking narratives and cinematic brilliance have left an enduring impact on the landscape of Indian parallel cinema, inspiring generations of filmmakers and cinephiles alike.
