Vijay Sethupathi’s action thriller Maharaja has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the highest-grossing South Indian film in China. The movie has outperformed Prabhas’ Baahubali 2: The Conclusion at the Chinese box office, grossing approximately ₹85.75 crore in just 21 days. With this achievement, Maharaja has surpassed Baahubali 2’s lifetime total of ₹80.50 crore, solidifying its position as the top South Indian grosser in China.
Dangal, starring Aamir Khan, continues to reign as the highest-grossing Indian film in China, with other notable films such as Secret Superstar, Andhadhun, and Bajrangi Bhaijaan following closely behind. However, Maharaja is steadily approaching the ₹100-crore mark, and if it surpasses this milestone, it will become the 9th biggest Indian grosser in China, overtaking Akshay Kumar’s Toilet: Ek Prem Katha.
On the global front, Maharaja is also performing exceptionally well, nearing the ₹200-crore mark at the worldwide box office. Currently, the film’s worldwide collection stands at ₹193 crore, and with continued success in China, it could become the fourth Tamil film of 2024 to achieve this feat.
Directed by Nithilan Saminathan, Maharaja follows the story of a barber in Chennai who seeks to retrieve his stolen dustbin from a police station, only for his intentions to be misinterpreted by the officers. The film stars an ensemble cast including Anurag Kashyap, Mamta Mohandas, Natarajan Subramaniam, and others.
Meanwhile, Vijay Sethupathi is also captivating audiences with his recent release, Viduthalai Part 2, a Tamil-language period crime thriller directed by Vetrimaaran. The film has received positive reviews, further establishing Sethupathi as a leading force in Indian cinema.
As Maharaja continues to break records and garner appreciation, it is clear that Vijay Sethupathi’s stellar performance and the film’s gripping narrative have struck a chord with audiences, both in India and abroad.
