Veteran filmmaker Anurag Kashyap recently shared an emotional and candid revelation about how Tamil superstar Vijay Sethupathi helped him during a financially difficult period, enabling him to fund his daughter Aaliyah Kashyap’s wedding. Speaking at The Huddle by The Hindu, Anurag recalled that it was only after Vijay offered him a role in the Tamil film Maharaja that he was able to afford the wedding expenses.
Anurag, who has been increasingly seen taking up acting roles in recent years, described his journey into South Indian cinema and the turning point that came through his frequent encounters with Vijay Sethupathi. “After Imaikka Nodigal, I turned down many offers from the South. But while working on post-production for Kennedy, I kept bumping into Vijay at my neighbour’s house,” he said.
Vijay, recognizing the potential of Anurag as an actor, persuaded him to take up a role in Maharaja, a move that proved both professionally and personally significant for Anurag. “I told him, ‘I need to get my daughter married next year, and I don’t think I can afford it.’ And Vijay said, ‘We’ll help you.’ And that’s how Maharaja happened,” Anurag shared.
The role became a financial lifeline for Kashyap and marked a turning point in his career as an actor. Released in June 2024, Maharaja, directed by Nithilan Saminathan, emerged as a sleeper hit, grossing ₹190 crore worldwide. Apart from Vijay Sethupathi and Anurag Kashyap, the film also featured Mamta Mohandas, Natty Subramaniam, Abhirami, and Divyabharathi.
Meanwhile, Anurag’s daughter Aaliyah Kashyap tied the knot with her longtime boyfriend Shane Gregoire in December 2024 in Mumbai. The wedding reception was a star-studded affair with attendees like Naga Chaitanya, Sobhita Dhulipala, Abhishek Bachchan, Suhana Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, and Bobby Deol, among others.
Anurag’s heartfelt gratitude and the gesture by Vijay Sethupathi have struck a chord with fans, showcasing not only a cross-industry camaraderie but also the deep personal connections that thrive in the world of cinema.
