Rajinikanth’s latest film, Vettaiyan: The Hunter, delivers an intense and action-packed story, bringing together some of the biggest names in Indian cinema. Directed by TJ Gnanavel, the film tackles the themes of justice, morality, and corruption, while offering fans plenty of high-octane moments and signature Rajinikanth swagger.
The film revolves around SP Athiyan (Rajinikanth), a ruthless encounter specialist in Kanniyakumari, whose mantra is, “Nishana lagaya toh shikaar pakka” (When I take aim, I hit). Athiyan believes criminals deserve no mercy, delivering his own brand of justice with lethal precision. However, his approach comes into conflict with Justice Satyadev, played by Amitabh Bachchan, who stands firmly against extrajudicial killings, emphasizing the importance of human rights and legal protocols.
The plot thickens as the two opposing worldviews collide, raising important questions about law enforcement and morality. Gnanavel’s script, co-written by B. Kiruthika, explores the complexities of lawlessness and the dangers of unchecked power, with a gripping narrative that touches on deep-seated class and caste prejudices in India’s policing system.
Rajinikanth is in full “action star” mode, dishing out devastation with aplomb. His on-screen presence is as magnetic as ever, though critics may argue he could have portrayed a character more reflective of his age. Nevertheless, the film strikes a balance between commercial elements and social commentary, addressing critical issues such as corruption, the flawed education system, and the hardships faced by marginalized communities.
The supporting cast shines, with notable performances by Rana Daggubati, Fahadh Faasil, and Ritika Singh. Faasil’s character, a clever ex-conman turned intelligence gatherer, adds a layer of wit and complexity to the plot, while Daggubati’s imposing presence contrasts sharply with Rajinikanth’s. Bachchan, as the wise Justice Satyadev, brings gravitas to the film, marking a memorable on-screen reunion with Rajinikanth after 33 years.
Vettaiyan: The Hunter is not without its preachy moments, particularly in the second half, where the narrative dives into the consequences of SP Athiyan’s actions. The film critiques the country’s broken education system and the exploitation of the underprivileged, adding depth to the otherwise action-heavy plot. Gnanavel’s clear vision, as previously seen in Jai Bhim, shines through, making the film more than just a typical Rajinikanth vehicle.
Though the pacing may falter at times, Vettaiyan: The Hunter successfully delivers a thought-provoking mix of action, drama, and societal reflection. Rajinikanth’s fans will undoubtedly revel in his larger-than-life persona, while audiences looking for substance will appreciate the film’s moral questions and its scathing commentary on systemic failures.
