Rajinikanth's 'Vettaiyan' Box Office Day 1: Stellar Start with ₹30 Crore Collection

Rajinikanth’s much-anticipated film Vettaiyan, directed by TJ Gnanavel, hit theatres on October 10 and has opened with a stellar box office collection of ₹30 crore across India, as per reports from Sacnilk. This impressive figure highlights the film’s strong start, particularly in Tamil Nadu, where it grossed ₹26.15 crore. Vettaiyan also saw earnings of ₹3.2 crore from Telugu shows, ₹60 lakh from Hindi audiences, and ₹50 lakh from Kannada viewings on its opening day.

The film recorded an overall Tamil occupancy rate of 59.43% on its first day, a significant achievement for Rajinikanth, who once again proves his box office pull. The film’s ensemble cast includes notable stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Fahadh Faasil, Rana Daggubati, Manju Warrier, Ritika Singh, Dushara Vijayan, and VJ Rakshan.

Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan Reunite After 33 Years

Vettaiyan marks the much-awaited on-screen reunion of Rajinikanth and Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan. The legendary duo last appeared together in the 1991 film Hum. At the audio launch of Vettaiyan, Rajinikanth shared a heartwarming story about Amitabh Bachchan’s perseverance during a difficult financial period. Rajinikanth revealed that Bachchan had to sell his Juhu home and other properties in Mumbai but worked tirelessly—18 hours a day, despite health issues—to pay off his debts and eventually bought back the same home, along with two more properties on the same street.

Rajinikanth remarked, “He is 82 now and still works for 10 hours a day. That’s Amitabh Bachchan!”

Mixed Reviews for ‘Vettaiyan’

Though Vettaiyan garnered impressive box office numbers, critics offered mixed reviews. Film critic Saibal Chatterjee rated the film 2.5 out of 5 stars. He commented, “Orbiting within and around the formulaic, writer-director TJ Gnanavel assembles a few novel thematic elements and gives them a reasonable shot in Vettaiyan. The outcome may be a tad erratic in terms of pace and emphasis but, overall, what the film pieces together is not all forgettable.”

Plot Overview

Vettaiyan follows the story of Kanyakumari Superintendent of Police, Athiyan, played by Rajinikanth. Athiyan takes on a high-stakes drug case in his region, which initially seems straightforward but soon unravels into a larger conspiracy. As the investigation deepens, the case entangles Athiyan’s personal relationships and tests his social responsibilities. The film explores themes of justice, loyalty, and personal sacrifice.

Produced by A Subaskaran and GKM Tamil Kumaran under Sun Pictures, Vettaiyan has quickly established itself as a box office success, thanks to the powerful performances of its star-studded cast, particularly Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan’s dynamic presence.
