Veteran singer Udit Narayan addressed the ongoing buzz around his viral kissing video at the trailer launch event of the upcoming film Pintu Ki Pappi. The Bollywood playback singer, who faced backlash after a clip of him kissing a fan surfaced online, took the controversy in stride, jokingly referencing the film’s title.
During the event, Udit Narayan quipped to choreographer Ganesh Acharya, “Khubsurat title hai aapki, Pintu Ki Pappi. Aur Udit Ki Pappi toh nahi?” (Your film’s title Pintu Ki Pappi is beautiful. It’s not Udit Ki Pappi, right?). His lighthearted remark drew laughter from the audience, showing that he was unfazed by the controversy.
The singer also clarified that the video in question was actually two years old. “Ye bhi ek ittefaq hai ki abhi hi ye release hona tha… Waise 2 saal pehle ka video hai, Australia ka jo aap abhi dekh rahe hai,” (It’s a coincidence that the music is releasing now. The video that’s going viral is actually two years old, from Australia), Udit Narayan explained.
The Viral Video Controversy
The controversy erupted last month when a video of Udit Narayan kissing a female fan on the lips went viral on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). In the clip, the woman is seen approaching the singer for a selfie while he is performing on stage. Initially, she kisses him on the cheek, but Udit Narayan unexpectedly reciprocates with a kiss on the lips, leaving her visibly surprised.
Following the backlash, Udit Narayan defended himself in an interview with Hindustan Times, saying, “Fans itne deewane hote hain na. Hum log aise nahi hain, hum decent log hain.” (Fans are crazy. We are not like this, we are decent people). He further added, “Some people encourage this and show their love through this. Udaake kya karna hai ab iss cheez ko?” (What is the point of making a big deal out of this?).
Despite the controversy, Udit Narayan remains one of Bollywood’s most beloved playback singers, known for his iconic songs in films like Dil To Pagal Hai, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai, and Chand Chhupa Badal Mein.
