Taapsee Pannu Reveals She Wasn't the First Choice for 'Haseen Dillruba' Role in Upcoming Sequel

As Taapsee Pannu prepares for the release of Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba, the sequel to the 2021 hit film Haseen Dillruba, she has shared an intriguing behind-the-scenes detail about her role in the franchise. The film, set to release on August 9 on Netflix, will see Pannu reprising her acclaimed role as Rani Saxena.

In an exclusive conversation with Indian Express, Pannu disclosed that she was not the initial choice for the character of Rani. According to Pannu, screenwriter Kanika Dhillon had originally cast another actor for the role. “I had heard from Kanika that she had a story of this sort. I had told Kanika that I was keen to hear it, but I went to shoot a film and when I returned, I learned that she had already narrated the film to some other actor and they were proceeding to lock things down soon,” Pannu revealed.

Despite this, Pannu’s enthusiasm for the role was evident when she was later asked by Dhillon to come to her office for a script narration. Reflecting on this moment, Pannu said, “When she ended the narration, I just laughed. I told her, ‘Ye meri kismat mein thi [I was meant to do this], I had told you before.’ It was an instant yes from my side.”

Pannu also discussed her approach to the character, acknowledging that she might not have been the most conventional choice for the role. “I am not the ideal cast for it, apart from the grey part of it. Because anything grey that is not right on paper, I am the go-to person. Apart from that, nothing was suiting my casting in the film. That was probably why I was excited. Because then I would approach it in a way that won’t be expected or be the most ideal way of doing it,” she explained. Pannu saw this as an opportunity to challenge herself and explore new facets of her acting skills.

Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba, directed by Vinil Mathew and produced by Aanand L. Rai, stars Vikrant Massey and Sunny Kaushal alongside Pannu. The film promises to build on the success of its predecessor, delving deeper into the gripping narrative that captivated audiences in the original.

As fans eagerly await the sequel’s release, Taapsee Pannu’s candid insights into her casting journey provide a fascinating glimpse into the film industry’s behind-the-scenes decisions and the actress’s dedication to her craft.
