Rajkummar Rao’s horror-comedy sequel, Stree 2, has shown remarkable resilience at the box office, as it crosses significant milestones even on its ninth day of release. The film, which debuted on August 15, has grossed nearly ₹20 crore overseas on day nine, further solidifying its global success.
Maddock Films, the production house behind the film, took to X (formerly Twitter) to reveal the latest box office figures. According to their update, Stree 2 has amassed a total worldwide gross of ₹456 crore. The breakdown includes ₹386 crore from India and ₹70 crore from international markets. The film’s net collection in India stands at ₹327 crore, with ₹308 crore accumulated in the first eight days and ₹19.3 crore on Friday, its ninth day.
In their celebratory post, Maddock Films shared a vibrant poster and wrote, “Stree fever on the rise! ₹456 crore worldwide GBO (gross). The storm has only grown stronger in its second weekend! Thank you everyone for your continued love and support.” The post was accompanied by emojis signifying strength and protection, reflecting the film’s impact and the enthusiastic reception from audiences.
Directed by Amar Kaushik, Stree 2 is the much-anticipated sequel to the 2018 hit Stree. The follow-up film delves deeper into the unique blend of horror and comedy that characterized its predecessor. This installment introduces a new antagonist, Sarkata, a headless villain with connections to the original film’s plot. The star cast from the first film returns, including Rajkummar Rao, Shraddha Kapoor, Abhishek Banerjee, Pankaj Tripathi, and Aparshakti Khurana. Special appearances by Akshay Kumar and Varun Dhawan add further star power to the film.
In an interview with PTI, Stree 2 writer Niren Bhatt discussed the film’s concept and audience expectations. He explained, “People have been eagerly waiting for this film for six years. We don’t get bogged down by expectations. Some viewers have noted a shift in focus between humor and horror, but our ghosts are metaphors for societal issues rather than supernatural entities.” He added that the characters in the film symbolize various aspects of societal norms, with the ghostly elements serving as allegories rather than literal hauntings.
With its impressive box office performance and positive audience reception, Stree 2 is on track to join the prestigious ₹500 crore club, continuing the success story of its predecessor and cementing its place in the hearts of audiences worldwide.
