The horror-comedy Stree 2, starring Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao, has proven to be an unstoppable force at the box office. On its eighth day, the film grossed a remarkable ₹428 crore globally, with no signs of slowing down as it heads towards the ₹500 crore mark.
Directed by Amar Kaushik, Stree 2 was released on August 15, coinciding with India’s Independence Day. The film has garnered widespread acclaim and continues to draw audiences both in India and internationally. On Thursday alone, the film raked in over ₹18 crore, further solidifying its position as a box office juggernaut.
The production house, Maddock Films, took to X (formerly Twitter) to share the film’s impressive earnings, revealing a breakdown of its first-week collections. The poster shared by the production team highlighted the film’s global box office (GBO) figures: ₹428 crore worldwide, with ₹363 crore from India and ₹64.5 crore from overseas. The total net collection in India stands at ₹308 crore, with ₹289.6 crore earned in the first seven days and an additional ₹18.2 crore on the eighth day
Stree 2 continues the story from the 2018 hit Stree, where the ghost of a wronged courtesan returns to the town of Chanderi to assist Vicky (Rajkummar Rao) and his friends in battling a new supernatural threat named Sarkata. The film features an ensemble cast, including Shraddha Kapoor, Pankaj Tripathi, Aparshakti Khurana, and Abhishek Banerjee. Additionally, Bollywood stars Akshay Kumar and Varun Dhawan make special cameo appearances, adding to the film’s appeal.
Future Plans for the Horror Comedy Universe
Producer Dinesh Vijan has confirmed that the Stree universe will continue to expand, with plans for a third installment already in motion. Speaking to the press last month, Dinesh revealed, “Stree 2 is like the mothership. It answers a lot of questions that Stree one raised and also tells you what the connections are. What will come next after Stree will be a film called Thama, which we will tell you about later. We have already written Stree 3, so the gap will be less.”
Despite facing competition at the box office from films like Khel Khel Mein and Vedaa, Stree 2 has emerged as a clear winner, continuing to draw large crowds to theaters across the country.
Praise from Industry Veterans
The success of Stree 2 has not gone unnoticed by industry peers. Recently, veteran actor Sunny Deol took to Instagram Stories to congratulate the team on their achievement. Sharing the film’s poster, Sunny wrote, “Congratulations to team Stree 2 for bringing heavy monsoons to the box office and cheer for exhibitors.” His words echo the sentiment of many who have applauded the film’s ability to captivate audiences and deliver strong box office results.
