The horror-comedy Stree 2, starring Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor, has officially entered the prestigious ₹500 crore club worldwide, breaking box office records on its 10th day. Directed by Amar Kaushik, the film, a sequel to the 2018 hit Stree, has captivated audiences globally, cementing its place as one of the highest-grossing films of the year.
According to the latest figures shared by the film’s producers, Maddock Films, Stree 2 has grossed ₹505 crore worldwide, with ₹426 crore coming from the Indian market and an additional ₹78.5 crore from overseas. The film achieved a historic milestone by recording the highest-ever box office earnings for a 2nd Saturday, adding ₹33 crore nett to its total, bringing its India nett collection to ₹361 crore.
The film continues the narrative of the first installment, which centered around a vengeful female ghost. In Stree 2, the story shifts focus to a new villain, Sarkata, a headless entity with a dark connection to the titular character. Sarkata terrorizes the women of Chanderi, abducting those with an independent voice, and in a pivotal scene, demolishes the statue of Stree, signaling the start of his reign of terror.
Director Amar Kaushik, who has been involved with the Stree franchise from the beginning, expressed his surprise at the overwhelming success of the sequel. “We had a party and enjoyed too much. We were confident that the film was good, but we didn’t expect that it would get these big numbers… I’m sleep deprived. I barely slept, so first I’ll sleep and then I’ll start thinking of my next movie,” he shared in a recent interview with PTI.
Kaushik revealed that the development of Stree 2 was a meticulous process, with the team working on the script for nearly two and a half years before production began. “We worked on the script of Stree for four to five months and for Stree 2, we sat for almost two and a half years. We started work on it before we began work on Bhediya. We were thinking about how to take the world of Stree ahead, and how to bring all of them together,” Kaushik explained, referencing the cameos by Akshay Kumar and Varun Dhawan.
The success of Stree 2 not only underscores the strength of the original film’s concept but also highlights the growing popularity of the horror-comedy genre in Indian cinema. With its impressive box office performance, Stree 2 has set a new benchmark, and fans are eagerly awaiting the next installment in this thrilling franchise.
