Actor-producer Sohum Shah’s critically acclaimed film Tumbbad has exceeded its initial box office performance with a successful re-release in theatres on September 13. The film, which originally released in 2018, has garnered ₹13.44 crore net at the domestic box office in its re-run, surpassing the ₹12.44 crore it earned during its first theatrical run.
Directed by Rahi Anil Barve and produced under Sohum Shah’s banner, Sohum Shah Films, Tumbbad was praised for its unique storytelling and haunting visuals when it first premiered on October 12, 2018. The film’s re-release came in response to popular demand from fans eager to experience the movie on the big screen once again.
On Thursday, the movie added ₹1.33 crore to its seven-day total, taking its collection to ₹13.44 crore. Sohum Shah Films shared the milestone on social media, expressing gratitude for the continued love from fans. “Your love continues to pour in and we are super thrilled!” the banner wrote in a post.
Set in a village in Maharashtra, Tumbbad follows Vinayak Rao, portrayed by Sohum Shah, as he embarks on a dangerous quest for a mythical treasure guarded by the malevolent entity Hastar. The film’s themes of greed, obsession, and the supernatural struck a chord with audiences, earning it a loyal fanbase.
In a recent interview with PTI, Sohum Shah revealed that the film didn’t reach viewers “properly” during its 2018 release. He shared how fans have consistently inquired about a re-release or a sequel, adding, “People want to see Tumbbad on the big screen. They have given me a lot of love, and I want to give them another opportunity to watch this movie in theatres.”
Responding to fans’ demands, Sohum Shah also announced a sequel to Tumbbad last week, much to the excitement of its followers. On National Cinema Day, Tumbbad tickets were sold at ₹99, and the impact of this promotion on the film’s Friday collections is yet to be revealed.
As the film continues to perform well in its re-release, the success of Tumbbad reaffirms its status as a cult favorite, proving that its story still resonates with audiences today.
