Bollywood actor Sharmin Segal, known for her roles in films like “Malaal” and “Atithi Bhooto Bhava,” has found herself at the center of controversy following her performance in the Netflix series “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar.” The young actor, who plays the character Alamzeb in the show, has been receiving criticism and trolling on social media for her alleged “expressionless” acting.
“Heeramandi,” which premiered on May 1, has garnered praise for actors like Aditi Rao Hydari, Sonakshi Sinha, Manisha Koirala, and Sanjeeda Sheikh. However, Segal’s portrayal has sparked negative reactions, with some users accusing her of nepotism due to her familial connection with director Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
The criticism escalated to the point where Segal disabled comments on one of her Instagram posts featuring her and Bhansali at the “Heeramandi” premiere in Los Angeles. Prior to this, a picture from a magazine shoot had also attracted a barrage of negative comments, labeling her acting as “wooden” and “inexpressive.”
Users expressed disappointment with her performance as Alamzeb, with comments such as, “no expression same expression?” and “she was on screen it was a yawn fest.” Others compared her unfavorably to her co-stars, stating that other actors would have been more deserving of the role.
This isn’t the first time Segal has faced questions about nepotism. At the trailer launch of “Malaal” in 2019, she acknowledged the presence of nepotism in the industry but emphasized the need for hard work and not misusing opportunities.
Apart from “Heeramandi” and “Malaal,” Sharmin Segal has also been seen in “Atithi Bhooto Bhava” alongside actors like Pratik Gandhi and Jackie Shroff.
