The actor revealed she was paid ‘dramatically different’ salaries than male co-stars for similar roles, and now wants to change that narrative through her production banner, Tralala Moving Pictures.
Actor Samantha Ruth Prabhu has spoken out about the persistent issue of gender pay disparity in the film industry, sharing her personal experiences and her resolve to bring change. In a recent interview with Foodpharmer, Samantha candidly admitted that she has often been paid significantly less than her male counterparts, even for roles that demanded equal effort and screen time.
“I have been in many films where, not really sure why, but you’re paid dramatically different salaries for the same number of days and the same kind of role,” Samantha said. While acknowledging that some hero-driven films may justify the pay gap due to box office draw, she questioned the inequality in projects where her contribution was just as demanding. “There was still this stark difference,” she added.
Samantha, who has spent 15 years in the industry, now aims to be part of the solution. She launched her production house, Tralala Moving Pictures, in December 2023 with the goal of creating more equitable opportunities in the entertainment world. Reflecting on her past experiences, she said, “That in my lifetime, I can’t do anything about my situation. But I can do something about the future. And if I don’t, who will?”
Samantha emphasized the importance of standing up for issues that personally affect her, stating, “You have to put your weight behind things that bother you. I do believe that you will find your purpose in the things that bother you.”
Director Nandini Reddy, speaking at the Bengaluru International Film Festival (BIFFES) earlier this year, praised Samantha’s commitment to fair practices. She revealed that Samantha had ensured pay parity for all cast and crew working on her debut production, tentatively titled Bangaram.
Samantha’s move is a significant step in addressing gender inequality in the Indian film industry, and her production house promises to set a precedent for fair treatment and equal pay for all artists—regardless of gender.
