Bollywood star Rakhi Sawant has taken legal action by filing a petition in the Bombay High Court, seeking to quash a defamation case initiated against her by actress Sherlyn Chopra. This legal clash arises from allegations of defamation, sexual harassment, and threats made by Chopra against Sawant, which the latter vehemently refutes as false and driven by Chopra’s quest for publicity.
Chopra’s legal move stemmed from Sawant’s public remarks regarding filmmaker Sajid Khan during the ‘Me Too’ campaign a few years ago. In November 2022, Chopra filed an FIR against Sawant, accusing her of defamation, sexual harassment, and incitement, alleging that Sawant labeled her as ‘characterless’ and a ‘porn star’ in a press conference. Furthermore, Chopra claimed that Sawant threatened her with severe physical harm, including hanging her upside down.
In response, Sawant has dismissed these allegations as a ploy for attention, asserting that Chopra’s motives are fueled by malice rather than truth. The actress emphasized the personal distress and professional ramifications she has faced due to these accusations.
Sawant’s legal representation contends that Chopra has a pattern of targeting well-known personalities for attention, citing instances involving Sajid Khan and Raj Kundra. Sawant’s defense highlights that Chopra never denied her involvement in the adult entertainment industry, thus challenging the defamation claims against her.
Rakhi Sawant’s legal counsel, advocate Ali Kaashif Khan, rebuffed the accusations detailed in the FIR, stating, “The complete FIR filed is false and bogus; the first informant herself has recorded the video of her alleged nudity, and the same has been uploaded on the internet for public viewing; Rakhi has only disclosed the same. Therefore, the IT Act is not attractive. Further, even 354A (sexual harassment) of the IPC is not attributed to her because the said section, as per law, cannot be attracted against a woman.”
As the legal battle unfolds, Sawant’s legal team continues to defend her position, aiming to refute the allegations made by Chopra, presenting the case before the Bombay High Court.
