Rajkumar Hirani Shares Update on Munna Bhai 3: ‘I Have a Unique Idea’

Fans of the Munna Bhai MBBS franchise have been eagerly awaiting a third installment, and filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani has now offered an exciting update. Speaking at the unveiling of SCREEN in Mumbai, Hirani revealed that he is actively working on scripts for Munna Bhai 3, which remains one of his top priorities. The celebrated director shared that he has been juggling several projects related to the Munna Bhai story but has yet to finalize a script.

“I have five half-finished scripts for Munna Bhai. I spent six months on a script, reach the interval, and it just wouldn’t go beyond that. There is a Munna Bhai LLB, Munna Bhai Chal Base, Munna Bhai Chale Amreeka, and more,” Hirani shared, referencing some of the ideas he’s explored. Despite the challenges, he emphasized that making the next installment is a priority, saying, “I have a unique idea. Of course, over the course of 100 years of cinema, everything has been said. But yeah, I am working on that idea.”

A Long-Awaited Sequel

The excitement around Munna Bhai 3 has been building for years, with lead actors Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi repeatedly expressing their eagerness to reprise their iconic roles as Munna Bhai and Circuit. Hirani confirmed that Dutt is particularly keen to return to the franchise, even joking that Sanjay might “come home and threaten” him to complete the film. “Sanju wants to do another Munna Bhai film,” Hirani added.

Challenges in the Development Process

Hirani admitted that creating the third film has not been easy, particularly given the massive success of the previous two films, Munna Bhai MBBS (2003) and Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006). “The most important factor is that the next installment has to be better than the previous films,” he said, underscoring the high expectations surrounding the project.

While a third film was once in the works under the title Munna Bhai Chale America, the project was canceled following Sanjay Dutt’s legal troubles and subsequent imprisonment. However, Hirani’s recent comments suggest that a new chapter in the Munna Bhai saga could soon be on the horizon, with the director “seriously considering” moving forward with the next film.

The Legacy of Munna Bhai

Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, the Munna Bhai series has become a beloved part of Indian cinema. The first two films, Munna Bhai MBBS and Lage Raho Munna Bhai, earned both critical acclaim and box office success, with Sanjay Dutt’s portrayal of Munna Bhai and Arshad Warsi’s performance as Circuit winning over audiences. The mix of comedy, emotion, and social messaging made the films stand out, and fans have been waiting eagerly for another adventure with the beloved duo.

With Hirani working on a “unique idea” and Dutt and Warsi ready to return, the possibility of Munna Bhai 3 becoming a reality has never seemed closer.
