Bollywood superstar and global icon Priyanka Chopra has joined the Oscar-shortlisted film Anuja as an executive producer, marking another milestone in her illustrious career.
Anuja narrates the poignant story of a nine-year-old girl working in a back-alley garment factory alongside her older sister, Palak. The film delves into the young protagonist’s struggle as she faces a life-altering decision impacting her future and her family.
On her association with the film, Priyanka expressed her pride, stating, “This beautiful film shines a spotlight on a subject that affects millions of children around the world, who are faced with the impossible decision between a future they cannot yet see and the immediate realities of their present.” She added, “Anuja is a poignant, thought-provoking piece that makes us reflect deeply on the power of choices, and how they shape the course of our lives. I am immensely proud to be associated with such a phenomenal and impactful project.”
The film was created in collaboration with the Salaam Baalak Trust (SBT), a nonprofit organization founded by filmmaker Mira Nair’s family to support street and working children. It is also being produced by Shine Global, known for its Academy Award-winning films like War/Dance (2007) and Inocente (2012), along with Krushan Naik Films.
The project has drawn significant attention, with renowned producers Mindy Kaling and Guneet Monga Kapoor also joining the team. This is Monga’s third nomination at the Oscars, following her successes with The Elephant Whisperers, which won Best Documentary Short at the 95th Academy Awards, and Period: End of Sentence, which clinched the same award at the 91st Academy Awards.
In addition to Anuja, another British-Indian film, Santosh, directed by Sandhya Suri, is also in contention for the Oscars. Starring Shahana Goswami, Santosh is the United Kingdom’s official entry for the prestigious awards and premiered earlier this year in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival.
With Anuja gaining global recognition, Priyanka Chopra’s involvement underscores her commitment to impactful cinema that transcends borders and addresses critical social issues.
