The much-anticipated live-action adaptation of the Hindu epic Ramayana, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Nitesh Tiwari, has been officially announced. The film, expected to be a monumental production, will release in two parts, with the first part scheduled for Diwali 2026 and the second part following in Diwali 2027, according to the announcement by the film’s makers on Wednesday.
Produced by Namit Malhotra of Prime Focus Studios, Ramayana aims to bring one of India’s most revered tales to life on a grand cinematic scale. The movie reportedly stars Bollywood actors Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi as the legendary characters Ram and Sita, while Kannada superstar Yash is set to take on the formidable role of Ravan. However, the makers have not yet officially confirmed the cast.
In an Instagram post, Malhotra expressed his excitement about the project, sharing that the idea of adapting Ramayana for the big screen has been in the works for over a decade. “More than a decade ago, I embarked on a noble quest to bring this epic that has ruled billions of hearts for over 5000 years to the big screen,” he wrote. “Our teams are working tirelessly to present the most authentic, sacred, and visually stunning adaptation of our history, our truth, and our culture – our Ramayana – for people across the world.” Malhotra also unveiled the film’s first poster, inviting audiences to join in the journey of bringing this cherished epic to life.
Tiwari, known for his success with films like Dangal and Chhichhore, also took to Instagram, expressing his gratitude and excitement for the project. “With a heart full of gratitude and a dream to share our Ramayana, our culture, and our history with the world, we seek your love and blessings,” he wrote, tagging Malhotra.
In a recent interview, Yash reportedly hinted at his role as Ravan, adding further intrigue to the project, though the casting remains to be officially announced. The film’s producers have stated that this adaptation will showcase Ramayana with “unmatched scale and visionary storytelling,” promising audiences a cinematic experience that resonates deeply with the tale’s cultural and spiritual significance.
As Ramayana gears up for production, anticipation builds for what is expected to be a groundbreaking portrayal of the epic. With a Diwali release planned for both parts, the film is set to be a festive treat for audiences in 2026 and 2027, celebrating one of India’s most beloved stories on a global platform.
