Mammootty’s upcoming Malayalam film, “Bramayugam,” directed by Rahul Sadasivan, is set to release on February 15, but not without stirring up controversy. The film, which features Mammootty in the lead role as Kunjamon Potty, faced legal action just before its release.
According to a report by Live Law, a case was filed against the makers of “Bramayugam” by the head of Punjamon Illam, a Brahmin household in Kerala. The case alleged that the portrayal of Mammootty’s character in the film was negative and defamatory, posing a risk to the family’s reputation.
The petitioner argued that Mammootty’s character, along with its traditional home, needed to be changed to avoid causing serious prejudice to the family and its descendants. Additionally, the film’s certification was challenged due to its depiction of black magic practiced by the lead character.
In response to the controversy, OTT Play reported that the makers of “Bramayugam” have changed the lead character’s name from Kunjamon Potty to Kodumon Potty. However, they have yet to reveal the true nature of the character, leaving audiences to speculate based on the trailer, which hints at a grey-shaded role.
Despite the legal dispute, Mammootty urged fans to approach the film with an open mind during its trailer launch in Abu Dhabi. “Bramayugam” is set in the 18th century and also stars Arjun Ashokan, Sidharth Bharathan, Amalda Liz, and Manikandan R Achari in key roles. Notably, the film will be presented in black-and-white format, distinguishing it from typical releases.
Jointly produced by Night Shift Studios and YNOT Studios, “Bramayugam” is not confined to the Malayalam audience; it will also be released in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada languages. With its intriguing premise and the recent name change amidst controversy, the film has garnered significant attention leading up to its release.
