
Acclaimed makeup artist Vikram Gaikwad, known for his transformative work in both Bollywood and regional cinema, passed away in Mumbai on Saturday at the age of 65. His funeral was held at 4:30 pm at Shivaji Park Crematorium in Dadar.
The National Award-winning artist began his illustrious career with the film Sardar and went on to work on a multitude of iconic projects that shaped Indian cinema. His portfolio includes celebrated films like Uri: The Surgical Strike, Dangal, 3 Idiots, Omkara, PK, Rang De Basanti, Delhi-6, Kaminey, and Ishqiya. He also worked on biopics and historical epics such as Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior, Sanju, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, and Shakuntala Devi.
Gaikwad’s contribution extended beyond Bollywood, leaving a mark on Marathi cinema with films like Lokmanya, Fatteshikast, Sher Shivraj, Balgandharva, and Katyar Kaljat Ghusali. His artistry also graced the Tamil and Bengali film industries, with work on Ponniyin Selvan, O Kadhal Kanmani, and Jaatishwar.
He won the National Film Award for Best Makeup Artist twice — first in 2012 for The Dirty Picture, starring Vidya Balan, and again in 2014 for the Bengali film Jaatishwar.
Ranveer Singh, who worked with Gaikwad on 83, posted a heartfelt tribute on his Instagram Story, simply writing, “Dada,” followed by dove, nazar amulet, infinity symbol, folded hands, and a broken heart emoji.
Vikram Gaikwad leaves behind a legacy of cinematic excellence, having redefined makeup artistry and brought countless characters to life with his extraordinary talent.
