Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis Responds to Public Demand for Tax-Free Status for 'Chhaava'

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has responded to growing public demand for granting tax-free status to Chhaava, a period drama based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. The film, starring Vicky Kaushal in the lead role, has been receiving immense appreciation for its historical accuracy and gripping storytelling.

Fadnavis’ Statement on ‘Chhaava’

Addressing the appeal, Fadnavis acknowledged the film’s historical significance and positive reception among the public.

“I am happy that a very good movie has been made on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. While I have yet to watch it, I have heard from people that this film has been made without distorting history,” he said.

The Chief Minister also noted that Maharashtra had already abolished entertainment tax in 2017 but assured that the government would explore ways to promote the film and make it accessible to a larger audience. “We will see what best we can do to promote this film and make it available to as many people as possible,” he added.

Box Office Success and Industry Support

Since its release on February 14, Chhaava has performed exceptionally well at the box office, surpassing the ₹100 crore mark in domestic earnings. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh reported that the film collected ₹121.43 crore in its opening weekend alone.

“‘CHHAAVA’ HAS DHAMAKEDAAR, ZABARDAST WEEKEND… Chhaava sets the #BoxOffice on fire on Sunday, registering a phenomenal opening weekend by crossing the ₹100 cr mark,” Adarsh wrote on Instagram.

Directed by Laxman Utekar, Chhaava showcases the life and legacy of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, earning praise for Vicky Kaushal’s compelling portrayal of the Maratha ruler. The film also features Akshaye Khanna and Rashmika Mandanna in pivotal roles.

Calls for Tax-Free Status

The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has strongly advocated for the film’s tax exemption, emphasizing that the legacy of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj deserves to be shared with a broader audience. The organization has formally appealed to CM Fadnavis, urging the government to grant tax-free status not just in Maharashtra but across India.

Vicky Kaushal on Playing Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj

In a recent interview, Vicky Kaushal opened up about the challenges of portraying such an iconic historical figure.

“Playing such a historical figure requires a lot of discipline, and discipline is tough. If you are not used to discipline, where I was, it becomes very challenging because it’s not just a one-month commitment; it’s a commitment for one-and-a-half to two years,” Kaushal shared.

A Film Celebrating Maratha Legacy

Chhaava brings to life the valiant journey of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, highlighting his bravery, sacrifices, and contributions to the Maratha empire. The film’s growing success and public admiration have amplified calls for a tax exemption, with many hoping that the Maharashtra government will take favorable action in the coming days.
