Tamil hit Maharaja, featuring Vijay Sethupathi, Anurag Kashyap, Abhirami, and Mamta Mohandas, has made an impressive debut in China, earning ₹19.30 crore within two days of its release. Directed by Nithilan Saminathan, the film’s success adds another feather to Tamil cinema’s cap on the global stage.
Impressive Box Office Numbers
Released across 40,000 screens in China on November 29, Maharaja started strong with ₹5.40 crore from its premiere shows. It earned ₹4.60 crore on its opening day and saw a significant spike on the second day, collecting ₹9.30 crore. This brings its total China earnings to ₹19.30 crore in just two days.
A Landmark Film in Indo-China Cinema
According to PTI, Maharaja holds the distinction of being the first Indian film released in China after both nations agreed to ease tensions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh, signaling a positive diplomatic move. The movie follows the legacy of Indian films like 3 Idiots, Dangal, Secret Superstar, Hindi Medium, and Baahubali 2, which also performed well in the Chinese market.
About the Film
Maharaja tells the intriguing story of a soft-spoken barber, played by Vijay Sethupathi, who visits a police station to file a complaint about his missing dustbin, affectionately named ‘Lakshmi.’ While initially dismissed by the police, his persistence uncovers a more sinister mystery.
The film, made on an estimated budget of ₹20 crore, has already grossed ₹125.38 crore worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing Tamil films of the year.
Global Recognition for Tamil Cinema
Jointly produced by The Route, Think Studios, and Passion Studios, the film also stars Natarajan Subramaniam, Divyabharathi, Singampuli, Aruldoss, Munishkanth, Sachana Namidass, Manikandan, and Bharathiraja in pivotal roles.
While Maharaja continues to perform strongly in China, fans and industry watchers are keen to see how much more it can earn in the coming days. Tamil films like The Greatest of All Time, Amaran, Vettaiyan, Indian 2, and Raayan currently hold the top spots among the highest-grossing Tamil movies this year.
With its growing success, Maharaja proves once again that compelling storytelling knows no borders.
