The timeless partnership of filmmaker Karan Johar with Bollywood superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol has produced some of the industry’s most beloved films. However, in a recent interview with Pinkvilla, Karan Johar disclosed that his Assistant Directors’ team had expressed a desire for the iconic duo to make a cameo appearance in his upcoming directorial venture, “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani.” Despite their enthusiasm, Karan admitted that he lacked the courage to approach Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol for this special appearance.
In the interview, Karan Johar candidly shared the idea that his Assistant Directors had proposed, saying, “The entire AD team would say that the best moment in ‘Tum Kya Mile’ should be… you track away from Alia (Bhatt) and Ranveer (Singh), and you see Shah Rukh and Kajol. You look at them, and Alia realizes this is pure love because they represent love. And I was like, with what kind of guts do I have, to go and ask Shah Rukh to not only do the cameo but also come to Kashmir, to get into costume.”
Karan further revealed his appreciation for Shah Rukh Khan’s willingness to collaborate on projects, emphasizing that Shah Rukh rarely refuses his requests. “Shah Rukh never says no to me. I have to pick and choose what to ask. Like I remember when we went as a team to play that massive, impactful cameo in ‘Brahmastra,’ at the end of the day, he looked at us and said, ‘This is Karan. I can’t say no.’ I know that I can’t take that empowered feeling for granted. I can’t keep going back,” Karan Johar explained.
The iconic trio’s association began when Karan, an Assistant Director, worked on Aditya Chopra’s legendary “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge” in 1995. Since then, Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol have featured in numerous iconic Karan Johar films, including “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” (1998), “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham” (2001), and “My Name Is Khan” (2010).
Notably, Kajol also made cameo appearances in Karan’s “Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna” (2006) and “Student of the Year” (2012), both of which featured Shah Rukh Khan in prominent roles. This enduring partnership between Karan Johar and the iconic actors continues to captivate audiences and remains a cherished part of Bollywood’s history.
