Karan Johar Takes Legal Action Against 'Shaadi Ke Director Karan Aur Johar' Makers for Misusing His Name

Bollywood filmmaker and producer Karan Johar has initiated legal proceedings against the makers of the upcoming movie Shaadi Ke Director Karan Aur Johar, alleging unauthorized usage of his name in the film’s title. Johar filed a lawsuit in the Bombay High Court, seeking an immediate halt to the movie’s release, scheduled for June 14.

In his plea, Karan Johar, known for his contributions to the Indian film industry, argues that the film’s title unjustly leverages his name without permission, thereby exploiting his brand, reputation, and image. The lawsuit targets writer-director Bablu Singh, producer India Pride Advisory, and Sanjay Singh associated with Shaadi Ke Director Karan Aur Johar. Johar’s legal team also filed an interim application seeking a suspension of the movie’s release until the ongoing litigation is resolved. The plea is presented before Justice RI Chagla.

The director-producer emphasizes that he has no association with the film and contends that the inclusion of his name in the title has led to substantial harm to his name and goodwill. Despite Karan Johar’s name not being explicitly connected in the movie’s title, given his prominence in the industry, it is implied that he is being referenced. This infringement is seen as a violation of Johar’s right to privacy, publicity, and personality rights.

While embroiled in legal proceedings, Karan Johar’s professional front remains active. His upcoming film Kill, touted as “India’s most violent movie,” is set for release on July 5, 2024. The movie, starring Laksh Lalwani, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) last year. Additionally, Johar has produced projects like Siddhart Malhotra’s Yoddha and Sara Ali Khan’s Ae Watan Mere Watan, with a promising lineup for 2024 and 2025 featuring films like Takht, Bad News, Jigra, Indian 2, Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, and The Bull. Johar also ventured into directing with Rocky aur Rani kii Prem Kahani in 2023 after a hiatus.

Karan Johar’s legal action against the makers of Shaadi Ke Director Karan Aur Johar underscores the importance of protecting intellectual property and personal branding in the entertainment industry. The outcome of this legal battle will likely have ramifications for how filmmakers use celebrity names in movie titles moving forward.
