In a recent social media uproar, Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut has taken aim at Twinkle Khanna for her past comments on men, igniting a heated discussion on feminism and privilege.
The controversy stemmed from an old video resurfacing where Twinkle Khanna, known for her witty remarks, joked about her journey to feminism and her thoughts on men. At an event in December, Twinkle humorously compared men to plastic bags, a remark that Kangana Ranaut found particularly objectionable.
Kangana Ranaut didn’t mince words in her response, labeling Twinkle Khanna as a “privileged brat” and questioning her understanding of feminism. Ranaut criticized Khanna for her seemingly flippant attitude towards men, suggesting that such remarks were out of touch with the struggles faced by ordinary people.
“What are these privileged brats who call their men polythene bags, are they trying to be cool?” Ranaut questioned, adding, “Nepo kids born with silver spoon, given film careers on golden platters, couldn’t do justice to that for sure, least they could do find some joy and fulfillment in selflessness of motherhood that also seems like a curse in their case what exactly do they want to be? Vegetables? Is that feminism?”
Twinkle Khanna’s original comments were made in a light-hearted manner during an interview where she recounted her journey to realizing she was a feminist. She humorously narrated her upbringing, noting how her mother, veteran actor Dimple Kapadia, instilled in her the idea that women do not need men to thrive.
“We never spoke about feminism or equality or anything. But it was very clear that there was absolutely no need for a man,” Twinkle Khanna had said. “So I grew up with that notion and for a long time I felt that there wasn’t much use for them.”
While Twinkle Khanna’s remarks were met with laughter during the interview, Kangana Ranaut’s criticism has sparked a deeper conversation about gender roles, privilege, and the definition of feminism in contemporary society.
Twinkle Khanna, who is married to Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar and has two children, transitioned from acting to become a successful author in recent years. Her latest book, “Welcome To Paradise,” was launched last year, marking her continued presence in the literary world.
As debates on feminism and gender equality continue to gain momentum, Kangana Ranaut’s outspoken critique of Twinkle Khanna’s remarks serves as a reminder of the complexities and nuances inherent in discussions surrounding gender and privilege in the entertainment industry and beyond.
