Despite being barred from release in Karnataka, Kamal Haasan’s much-anticipated film Thug Life is all set to hit theatres across the rest of India on Thursday, June 5. While the ban in one of India’s key film markets may seem like a setback, industry experts believe the controversy surrounding the film has actually boosted its visibility, turning a potential loss into a surprising promotional win.
The film, directed by the acclaimed Mani Ratnam and featuring music by Oscar-winner A.R. Rahman, had minimal pre-release buzz until a legal controversy brought it into the national spotlight. The nature of the judicial issue remains under wraps, but trade analysts assert that the situation has generated extensive media coverage and online discussions, essentially offering the producers free publicity.
According to film trade analyst Girish Wankhede, the ban in Karnataka could result in a box office loss of around ₹7–8 crore. However, he adds that this figure pales in comparison to the marketing costs typically incurred for big-budget films. “For a high-profile film, promotions alone can cost between ₹30 to ₹50 crore,” Wankhede explained. “If this controversy is viewed as a part of the marketing effort, then the lost revenue could be considered an investment that’s already paying off. Now, Thug Life is a household name.”
Film distributor and cinema chain owner Raj Bansal shared more optimistic figures. “In Hindi markets alone, the film’s advance bookings have touched ₹65 lakh. Across all languages, Thug Life has already clocked in over ₹10 crore in advance sales — and that’s before release day.”
The film arrives at a crucial juncture in Kamal Haasan’s career. His last film, Indian 2, underperformed at the box office. However, his 2022 action thriller Vikram was a massive hit, collecting ₹247.32 crore net in India and ₹414.43 crore worldwide.
While the final verdict on Thug Life‘s commercial fate will emerge after release, one thing is clear — the controversy has propelled it to front-page news and social media trends. For a film that once flew under the radar, Thug Life now marches into theatres with the power of attention, anticipation, and a star-studded creative team.
