Kangana Ranaut Announces Postponement of "Emergency" Amid Censor Board and Sikh Community Controversies

Kangana Ranaut’s highly anticipated film Emergency has been postponed once again due to pending certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The actor-turned-MP shared the news on social media platform X, expressing her disappointment. “With a heavy heart, I announce that my directorial Emergency has been postponed. We are still waiting for the certification from the censor board. The new release date will be announced soon. Thanks for your understanding and patience,” she wrote.

The film, co-produced by Kangana’s Manikarnika Films and Zee Studios, was initially slated for a September 6 release. However, certification issues with the CBFC and ongoing legal battles have delayed its release indefinitely. Zee Entertainment Enterprises had approached the Bombay High Court, seeking clearance for the film’s release, but the court declined to provide immediate relief. The delay follows objections from Sikh organizations, particularly the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), which raised concerns about the film’s portrayal of historical events.

Opposition from Sikh Organizations

The film, which focuses on the Emergency declared by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975, has faced backlash from the Sikh community. The SGPC, along with the Akal Takht, has voiced objections to certain scenes in the trailer, alleging that they distort historical facts and hurt the sentiments of Sikhs. A legal notice was issued to the producers, accusing the film of being “anti-Sikh.”

In response, the Madhya Pradesh High Court directed the censor board to review these objections before certifying the movie. The Bombay High Court subsequently refused to grant immediate clearance, leading to further delays.

Historical and Political Controversy

Emergency delves into one of India’s most controversial political periods—the 21-month Emergency rule imposed by Indira Gandhi, which is widely regarded as a dark chapter in Indian democracy. The film explores key historical moments, including Gandhi’s assassination and the rise of the Khalistan movement under Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale in the 1980s. Kangana Ranaut portrays Indira Gandhi, while veteran actors like Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, and Milind Soman round out the ensemble cast. Ranaut also wrote the screenplay, further establishing her role as a filmmaker.

Ongoing Delays and Future Uncertain

Originally planned for release last year, Emergency has already faced multiple delays due to scheduling conflicts and the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The film’s release was first postponed to June 2024 and then to September. With the ongoing censor board certification issues, the release date now remains uncertain.
