Gulshan Devaiah Breaks Silence Amidst 'Ulajh's Box Office Struggles

As the political thriller Ulajh starring Gulshan Devaiah and Janhvi Kapoor falters at the box office, Devaiah has taken to social media to address the film’s lackluster performance. Released last Friday, Ulajh has not met expectations on its opening day and continues to struggle in its early days at the box office.

Gulshan Devaiah, praised for his performance in the film, shared his thoughts on the film’s challenges in a candid post on X (formerly Twitter). Reflecting on the industry’s ups and downs, Devaiah acknowledged the harsh realities of filmmaking. “Struggle is the salt that makes success taste good,” he wrote. “The ones who don’t embrace the struggle will never achieve anything worthwhile. This is a tough business. Period.”

As of its first two days in theatres, Ulajh has amassed a total of ₹2.85 crore in India. The film’s performance remains to be seen, particularly if it can gain traction over the weekend. Devaiah’s comments underscore the unpredictable nature of the industry, where even well-received performances can sometimes be overshadowed by a film’s overall reception.

In response to a fan’s comment suggesting that OTT platforms are the future, Devaiah expressed his strong belief in the theatrical experience. “Feature films are meant to be seen on the big screen. Hit flop toh chalta rahta hai,” he said, translating to “Films will either be hits or flops.” Devaiah emphasized his idealism regarding cinema, stating that while he remains pragmatic about many aspects, he holds a deep personal connection to the traditional film viewing experience.

Ulajh, directed by Sudhanshu Saria, features Janhvi Kapoor in the role of Suhana, an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer who faces challenges and criticism in her role as the youngest Deputy High Commissioner. The film explores themes of corporate blackmail and the struggles of being labeled as a product of nepotism. The cast also includes Adil Hussain, Roshan Mathew, and Meiyang Chang. Produced by Vineet Jain and co-produced by Amrita Pandey under Junglee Pictures, Ulajh has garnered attention for its ambitious storyline and strong performances, despite its initial box office performance.
