Mumbai Police’s investigation into the shocking knife attack on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan has taken a surprising turn. The fingerprints collected from Mr. Khan’s residence do not match those of the accused, Shariful Islam, sources revealed.
Nineteen sets of fingerprints were gathered from the crime scene after the January 15 attack at the actor’s home. These prints were sent to the state Criminal Investigation Department’s (CID) fingerprint bureau for analysis. However, a system-generated report confirmed that the fingerprints do not belong to Shariful. The CID has informed Mumbai Police of this negative result, prompting authorities to send additional samples for further testing.
The Attack on Saif Ali Khan
The 54-year-old actor suffered six stab wounds during the attempted burglary at his home. The intruder, armed with a knife, attacked Mr. Khan when confronted. One of the injuries, dangerously close to his spinal cord, caused a spinal fluid leak, but doctors at Lilavati Hospital have confirmed that he is recovering well. Released from the hospital on Tuesday, Mr. Khan has been advised to rest for a week.
The Accused and Ongoing Investigation
Shariful Islam, a Bangladeshi national, was arrested based on CCTV footage. He reportedly entered India illegally and has told police he attempted the burglary to obtain money for fake citizenship documents. Authorities are now searching for the individual who allegedly promised to forge these documents for Shariful.
Western Railway was enlisted to assist in identifying the suspect through its facial recognition system after CCTV footage from Mr. Khan’s building proved unclear. Using footage from Bandra station, where Shariful had boarded a train, police shortlisted suspects and tracked him down.
Building a Bulletproof Case
While Shariful has been apprehended, the fingerprint mismatch has raised questions, and Mumbai Police are working to gather more evidence to strengthen their case. The investigation continues, with authorities determined to uncover all links in this high-profile incident.
Actor’s Recovery and Public Concern
Fans of Saif Ali Khan have expressed relief at his recovery but remain concerned over the brazen nature of the attack. The incident has also highlighted the issue of illegal immigration and the risks posed by forged documents.
Mumbai Police’s findings and further updates in this case are awaited as the investigation unfolds.
