Varun Dhawan’s high-budget Christmas release, Baby John, has had an underwhelming performance at the domestic box office, earning ₹32.65 crore in its first week. Despite extensive promotions, the film has struggled to compete against the massive success of Allu Arjun’s Pushpa 2 and Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King.
Opening Numbers and Decline
The film debuted with double-digit earnings, marking Varun Dhawan’s biggest opener in five years. However, Baby John experienced a sharp decline in collections from the second day. According to reports by Sacnilk, the film minted ₹2.15 crore on Tuesday, contributing to its seven-day total of ₹32.65 crore.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh took to X (formerly Twitter) to discuss the film’s performance. He highlighted the intense competition Baby John faced from Pushpa 2 in mass markets and Mufasa in urban centers. He remarked, “Pushpa 2 continues to be a mighty opponent for all films. Baby John must sustain its momentum till Sunday to achieve a respectable extended weekend total.“
Critical Reception
Critics have also been lukewarm toward Baby John. While the film features action-packed sequences, it has been described as falling short of delivering the excitement expected of a high-octane action film. A review noted, “Baby John falls way, way short of working action movie fans up into a celebratory frenzy. Not that it does not try. But all its vim and vigour, delivered in the form of noisy, overwrought driblets over a running time of two hours and forty minutes, come to naught.“
Production and Cast
Jointly produced by Atlee’s A for Apple Studios, Cine1 Studios, Jio Studios, and Vipin Agnihotri Films, Baby John features an ensemble cast including Keerthy Suresh, Wamiqa Gabbi, Jackie Shroff, and Rajpal Yadav.
Competition and Challenges
The film’s release during the Christmas season was expected to boost its box office performance. However, the overwhelming popularity of Pushpa 2, which continues to dominate both urban and rural markets, has significantly overshadowed Baby John.
As Baby John enters its second week, it remains to be seen whether the film can recover its momentum and achieve a respectable lifetime collection.
