Suhani Bhatnagar, the talented young actress known for her portrayal of young Babita Phogat in the blockbuster movie “Dangal,” has passed away at the tender age of 19 due to complications from Dermatomyositis, a rare inflammatory disease. Her untimely demise has sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry and beyond, leaving fans and colleagues mourning the loss of a promising talent.
Suhani’s family revealed that she had begun experiencing symptoms of the disease approximately two months ago. However, it was only ten days before her passing that she received a formal diagnosis. Despite being admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences on February 7 for treatment, she succumbed to the illness on February 16, leaving behind a legacy of youthful exuberance and remarkable talent.
In an exclusive interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Shweta Singhai, Senior Consultant – Rheumatology at Sakra World Hospital in Bengaluru, shed light on the complexities of Dermatomyositis. Dr. Singhai explained that while the exact cause of the disease remains unknown, it is believed to stem from various factors, including viral infections, autoimmune responses where the body’s immune system attacks its own muscles and tissues, bacterial infections, environmental triggers such as UV radiation and air pollutants, as well as certain medications like statins used for cholesterol management. Moreover, Dermatomyositis has been associated with underlying malignancies in a significant proportion of patients, necessitating careful screening, particularly in cases involving unexplained weight loss.
The symptoms of Dermatomyositis manifest as muscle weakness and a distinctive skin rash. Dr. Singhai emphasized that affected individuals often experience difficulty in raising their arms above shoulder level and struggle with basic movements such as standing up from a seated position. The characteristic rash, described as purplish in hue, tends to appear around the eyes, cheeks, chest, and upper back. Additionally, patients may suffer from joint pain and swelling, inflammation of the heart and lung muscle tissues, as well as vascular inflammation affecting the skin and muscles.
Dr. Singhai underscored the importance of timely intervention, highlighting that untreated cases can lead to complications such as difficulty in swallowing and breathing, necessitating urgent medical attention. While there is no known cure for Dermatomyositis, management typically involves a multifaceted approach comprising medication, physical therapy, exercise, heat therapy, and adequate rest.
Suhani Bhatnagar’s tragic demise serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges posed by rare diseases and the critical importance of early detection and comprehensive treatment. As the entertainment industry mourns the loss of one of its brightest young talents, her memory will continue to inspire countless individuals, and her legacy will endure through her unforgettable contributions to cinema.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to Suhani’s family, friends, and fans during this difficult time. May her soul rest in peace.
