Bollywood’s latest action-packed film Jaat, starring Sunny Deol and Randeep Hooda, has sparked a major controversy after a scene allegedly offended members of the Christian community. A First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged against the film’s lead actors and key members of the production team under charges of hurting religious sentiments.
According to the complainant, a specific scene in the film has “deeply hurt the religious sentiments of the entire Christian community.” The complaint, filed in Jalandhar, accuses the makers of showing disrespect towards Jesus Christ, particularly highlighting a sequence where Randeep Hooda’s character stands beneath a crucifix above the holy pulpit inside a church while worshippers are praying. The scene reportedly involves elements of intimidation and unruly behavior.
The FIR, registered under Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) — which pertains to deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings — names actors Sunny Deol, Randeep Hooda, Vineet Kumar Singh, director Gopichand Malineni, and the producers of the film. The complainant also alleged that the filmmakers intentionally released Jaat during the holy period of Good Friday and Easter to provoke unrest and communal tension.
Jaat, which released on April 10, features Sunny Deol in a lead role with Randeep Hooda playing the main antagonist. The film also stars Vineet Kumar Singh, Saiyami Kher, Regina Cassandra, Zarina Wahab, Jagapathi Babu, and others. It marks the Hindi directorial debut of Gopichand Malineni, known for his work in Telugu cinema with hits like Don Seenu and Veera Simha Reddy. Produced by Mythri Movie Makers and People Media Factory, the film has been released in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu, and garnered over ₹32 crore at the box office in its opening weekend.
Despite the controversy, Jaat continues to perform well commercially. On Thursday, Sunny Deol announced that a sequel, Jaat 2, is already in the works, signaling the franchise’s continuation.
The production team has yet to release an official statement addressing the allegations.
