In a recent development, the central government has highlighted the age limit for conceiving a child through the In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) method, sparked by the news of late singer Sidhu Moose Wala’s parents welcoming a new addition to their family last Saturday. This announcement comes amidst controversy surrounding the IVF treatment received by Charan Kaur, mother of Sidhu Moose Wala, and her husband Balkaur Singh.
The couple’s joyous occasion of welcoming a child nearly two years after their singer-son’s tragic demise took an unexpected turn when Balkaur Singh claimed that the district administration had been pressuring him to provide documents regarding the child’s birth. Charan Kaur, aged 58, had successfully undergone IVF treatment, a process that allows conception outside the body through medical assistance.
In an Instagram video, Balkaur Singh expressed his concerns about the administration’s demands, stating, “The district is harassing me to provide documents about the child. I urge the government and the Chief Minister to allow the treatment to proceed. I am ready to comply with all legal requirements and provide necessary documentation when required.”
The Union health ministry has intervened in the matter, seeking a report from the Punjab government regarding Charan Kaur’s IVF treatment. The ministry emphasized that the age limit for women undergoing ART (Assisted Reproductive Technology) services, including IVF, is between 21 to 50 years, as per Section 21(g)(i) of the Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Act, 2021.
Balkaur Singh had previously shared the news of his second son’s birth on Instagram, along with a photo of the newborn, assuring that the family was in good health. This joyous event comes in the wake of tragedy, as Sidhu Moose Wala, the elder son of Balkaur Singh and Charan Kaur, was tragically shot dead in Punjab’s Mansa district on May 29, 2022.
The incident has raised important discussions about the regulation and ethics surrounding IVF treatments, particularly concerning age restrictions and the legal documentation required. As the government seeks clarification and compliance with established regulations, this case serves as a reminder of the complexities and challenges involved in assisted reproductive technologies in India.
