Next court hearing scheduled for June 16; PVR Inox alleges breach of theatrical release contract by Maddock Films
In a major development for the film Bhool Chuk Maaf, the Bombay High Court on Saturday granted an ad-interim injunction against Maddock Films, barring the release of the movie on OTT platforms until further notice. The next hearing in the matter is slated for June 16.
The order comes after PVR Inox filed a petition objecting to Maddock Films’ last-minute announcement to bypass a theatrical release and directly premiere the movie on Amazon Prime Video on May 16. The film, starring Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi, was originally scheduled to hit cinema screens on May 9.
“In light of recent events and the heightened security drills across the nation, we at Maddock Films and Amazon MGM Studios have decided to bring our family entertainer, Bhool Chuk Maaf, directly to your homes on May 16—only on Prime Video, worldwide,” the production house stated on social media.
PVR Inox, however, called the decision a breach of contract. According to the multiplex chain, an agreement was signed between the two parties on May 6, 2025, just days before the film’s planned theatrical debut. The contract explicitly required Bhool Chuk Maaf to complete an 8-week run in theatres before it could be released on any digital platform.
The court has now restrained Maddock Films from making the film available online until the issue is resolved. The case will be revisited on June 16, with both parties expected to present their arguments regarding the contractual obligations and implications of the sudden release change.
Directed and written by Karan Sharma, Bhool Chuk Maaf marks the first on-screen collaboration between acclaimed actor Rajkummar Rao and rising star Wamiqa Gabbi. The legal dispute has now cast uncertainty over the film’s release strategy, which may impact future distribution decisions within the Indian film industry.
