Neeraj Pandey’s highly anticipated romantic saga Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha, starring Ajay Devgn and Tabu, made its debut at the domestic box office on Friday with a disappointing opening collection of ₹2 crore. Despite the star power of Ajay Devgn and Tabu, who are collaborating for the 10th time, the film’s performance fell short of expectations.
In comparison, the week’s other Bollywood release, Sudhanshu Saria’s spy thriller Ulajh featuring Janhvi Kapoor and Gulshan Devaiah, earned ₹1.10 crore on its opening day. However, with Ajay and Tabu’s proven track record, the initial numbers for Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha are notably underwhelming.
Historically, films featuring Ajay Devgn and Tabu have performed well at the box office. Their 2015 crime thriller Drishyam, directed by Nishikant Kamat, opened with ₹5.8 crore. The sequel, Drishyam 2, directed by Abhishek Pathak, saw a significant boost with an opening day collection of ₹15.38 crore. Similarly, their 2017 comedy Golmaal Again earned a staggering ₹30 crore on its opening day, buoyed by its Diwali release. De De Pyaar De (2019) and Bholaa (2023), both starring the duo, also exceeded the opening figures of Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha, with earnings of ₹8.5 crore and ₹11 crore respectively.
‘Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha’ features a musical love story spanning two decades, from 2002 to 2023. The film also stars Jimmy Sheirgill, Shantanu Maheshwari, and Saiee Manjrekar. Initially slated for release on July 5, the film’s launch was postponed following requests from exhibitors and the distribution fraternity. The release was strategically rescheduled to avoid competition with Nag Ashwin’s dystopian sci-fi epic Kalki 2898 AD.
The film’s underwhelming opening has raised questions about its future performance and whether it can gain traction in the coming weeks. For now, it remains to be seen if Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha can turn its fortunes around at the box office.
