Arundhati Roy, renowned for her powerful literary voice and unyielding stance against injustice, has been honored with the PEN Pinter Prize 2024. Established in memory of Nobel laureate Harold Pinter, the award recognizes writers of exceptional literary merit who demonstrate a fierce commitment to exposing societal truths.

Roy, who will receive the award at a ceremony hosted by the British Library on October 10, joins a prestigious list of past recipients including Margaret Atwood and Salman Rushdie. The prize celebrates authors residing in the UK, Republic of Ireland, or Commonwealth who, in the spirit of Pinter’s Nobel Prize speech, confront the complexities of our world with unwavering clarity and intellectual rigor.

Ruth Borthwick, chair of English PEN, praised Roy for her ability to weave urgent narratives of injustice with eloquence and insight. Reflecting on Roy’s impact, Borthwick emphasized her global perspective and steadfast advocacy for marginalized voices, underscoring that “her powerful voice is not to be silenced.”

Actor Khalid Abdalla described Roy as a beacon of freedom and justice whose writings have provided clarity and determination for nearly three decades. He highlighted her enduring relevance in addressing global crises, noting that her insights are particularly poignant amidst current global challenges.

Roger Robinson, another member of this year’s jury, lauded Roy’s incisive commentary on issues ranging from environmental degradation to human rights abuses, affirming her as a deserving recipient of the PEN Pinter Prize.

In her acceptance, Roy expressed gratitude for the recognition, acknowledging the profound influence of Harold Pinter’s legacy on her own commitment to truth-telling through literature. She lamented the world’s current trajectory and underscored the responsibility of writers to illuminate its complexities.

Roy’s achievement comes amid ongoing legal challenges in India, where she and Sheikh Showkat Hussain face prosecution under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for their outspoken views.

The PEN Pinter Prize 2024 reaffirms Arundhati Roy’s enduring impact on global literature and her unwavering dedication to advocating for justice and social change through her acclaimed body of work.
