The Incident That Left a Mark
At just 19 years old, Rahman was already working with various composers and playing in a band to support his family financially. During this period, a bandmate’s offhand comment struck a chord. Recalling the incident, Rahman said, “One time, the guitarist in the band was drunk and turned to me, saying, ‘What are you playing? You are playing film music.’ It was a very condescending remark. This happened in 1985 or 86.”
While the comment was not meant to be hurtful, it left an imprint on Rahman’s heart, prompting him to introspect.
A Catalyst for Change
The remark spurred Rahman to rethink his approach to music. He explained, “At the moment, I didn’t realize what he meant, but weeks later, it hit me. I realized he was right. I had been influenced by the composers I was playing for at the time. From that point on, I began a mental journey to identify my own style.”
It took Rahman seven years to completely detach himself from those influences and develop the signature sound that would later define his illustrious career. “That comment became a positive influence for me to move away from not just external influences but my own as well,” he added.
The Journey Ahead
Today, AR Rahman stands as a global icon whose compositions transcend borders and genres. His ability to innovate has earned him numerous accolades, including two Academy Awards.
Currently, Rahman is composing the music for Hansal Mehta’s upcoming series Gandhi. He is also working on the soundtrack for Ram Charan’s highly anticipated film, RC16, directed by Buchi Babu.
